Development Programme

Introduction

Young researchers are invited to apply for participation in the Development Programme (DP) during the International Input-Output Conference 2020 in Kuala Lumpur. The IIOA introduced this event at the International Input-Output Conference in Glasgow, 2019. This year, the DP will be organized in cooperation with the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET)’s Young Scholars Initiative, which will support the participation of highly motivated young researchers.

The programme aims at providing young researchers with opportunities to learn individually from experienced researchers in the community. The DP organizer will assign an experienced discussant to each presenter. He/she will advise during the session, not only on the choice of methods and data but more so about the style and structure of the paper. In addition, this discussant will be encouraged to provide suggestions about how to position the study relative to the existing literature and about how to appeal to a wider range of readers, etc. Presenters will also be given the opportunity to consult directly with their discussant on what kind of advice they are seeking.

Other conference participants will be invited to attend the Development Programme sessions as well and are encouraged to contribute to the discussions.

Date and time

The DP sessions will most probably take place on Wednesday, 31 August 2022.

Session format

Each session will last 45 minutes, with the following format:

• Presentation (15 minutes)
• Comments by the discussant (20 minutes)
• Question and answer with attendees (10 minutes)

The presentations should be focused on the research questions, key findings and implications rather than the detailed deployment of methodology.

Prerequisites for presentation in the DP

• At the time of application, the principal author should be under 40 years of age.
• The paper to be presented must be unpublished work of substantial quality such that a future version might satisfy the academic standards expected for publication in Economic Systems Research or comparable journals.
• An appropriate discussant for your paper (in terms of experience and specialization) can be found within the community.

Application procedure

Prior to the application for the Development Programme:

• You must have submitted an abstract by the deadline (28 March 2022; see Important Dates);
• Your abstract must have been accepted by the Scientific Program Committee (on May 2020 at the latest, see Important Dates); and
• You must have registered in COPASS (open from early February 2022 onwards);
• You must have submitted a full paper by the deadline (1 June 2022; see Important Dates). Other points to follow:

• You will see a checkbox in your own individual paper page in COPASS. Please mark it to apply for the Development Programme.

Important note:

• It is not allowed for one presenter to apply for having multiple papers included in the DP.
• Revisions of the submitted full paper can be uploaded onto COPASS until the end of June 2022, but must remain unaltered from then onwards, until the DP sessions.
• Applicants will be notified about the decision regarding admission by 1 July, 2022.
• In order to confirm participation, the successful applicants are requested to complete the payment of the conference fee (as specified in the conference website) within ONE WEEK after the notification of acceptance. Please prepare for the payment well in advance.
• Papers that will not be included in the DP (either because of the competitive selection process or the absence of an appropriate discussant), will automatically be considered for inclusion in a regular session.

Financial Support for Young Researchers

This year’s Development Programme is partnering with the Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) of the Institute for New Economic Thinking. The YSI provides a platform and support to students, young professionals, or others who embrace new and critical ways of thinking about the economy. Attendant to this aim, the YSI will provide travel stipends and cover accommodation for selected participants of this year’s Development Programme.
